How Working Parents Can Hack Their Professional Development

Water Cooler Wisdom

In my home office, I have a stack of business books I've been meaning to (at least) skim, but the idea of sitting down with 250 pages overwhelms me.  Considering the average working parent's schedule, most don't have time to pursue an additional degree or attend lengthy onsite trainings while parenting and working full time.    However,  keeping skills current  is essential to gainful employment through the automation age.

what is your company providing if you’re working from home?

Ask a Manager

In my situation, I’ll be setting up a home office for the first time. I’ve been in outside sales for over a decade and while we “worked from home” in many respects, we really worked from our cars and cafes and had an office to go to for any office supplies or printing. I do have my own printer, but I know I’ll be needing a better chair, plus there’s the cost of wifi, the cost of heating my home all day in winter (northern climate here), etc.

I don’t want coworkers to call my cell phone, managing a boyfriend, and more

Ask a Manager

I had a non-broken desk chair for about 10 days once and then someone else in the office took it. Especially as other people don’t have nice comfortable desk chairs and if I’m gonna do this, I’m going to bring my quite obviously nice one from my home office and buy an extra equally nice one. Even if labeled, once it’s in the office it’s out of your complete control, especially since you’re not always at that site, and who knows what could happen to it.

We allowed her to move, shift her schedule, and start working from home. She’d been very unhappy living in the city where our offices are located, and the combination of the move to a place where she had a bigger support network and my grandboss’s real talk made a big difference. This has nothing to do with working remotely– my coworkers at the home office feel the same way. It’s the last week of “where are you now?”
