The Downsides To Working From Home And What You Can Do About It

Corn on the Job

Working from home and not having to deal with long commutes, nosy coworkers and less distractions sounds like a dream to some. Those are really nice benefits and can certainly make a case for leaving the rat race and setting up a home based business or at least working remotely. In this article, I will go over some of the downsides to working from home as well as some tips on how to lessen those negatives. Make sure to have a separate space for your office.

what is your company providing if you’re working from home?

Ask a Manager

In my situation, I’ll be setting up a home office for the first time. I’ve been in outside sales for over a decade and while we “worked from home” in many respects, we really worked from our cars and cafes and had an office to go to for any office supplies or printing. I do have my own printer, but I know I’ll be needing a better chair, plus there’s the cost of wifi, the cost of heating my home all day in winter (northern climate here), etc.

I don’t want coworkers to call my cell phone, managing a boyfriend, and more

Ask a Manager

I had a non-broken desk chair for about 10 days once and then someone else in the office took it. Especially as other people don’t have nice comfortable desk chairs and if I’m gonna do this, I’m going to bring my quite obviously nice one from my home office and buy an extra equally nice one. Even if labeled, once it’s in the office it’s out of your complete control, especially since you’re not always at that site, and who knows what could happen to it.

We allowed her to move, shift her schedule, and start working from home. She’d been very unhappy living in the city where our offices are located, and the combination of the move to a place where she had a bigger support network and my grandboss’s real talk made a big difference.
