We’ve been up-front that we can’t adjust compensation at the moment — but again, all of our peer institutions have gone through multiple rounds of layoffs, salary cuts, and/or furloughs, and no one is being underpaid for the field. There’s also more discussion in the culture about setting reasonable boundaries with employers, although I don’t know that it’s really happening more in practice.

A few months after starting, my director left due to the culture. That 2 years would have been up at the beginning of 2021. In my case, I could talk about how COVID-related closures affected OldJob’s revenues to the point of causing layoffs.

This was near the start of the pandemic, and while I considered myself fortunate to still be employed while so many were not, I found that the new company wasn’t a great fit due to the culture and an unexciting (to me) product, so I started looking around for other opportunities. A few months passed with no progress, but I eventually began interviewing with a company where the culture and product would be a better fit for me.
