how do employers verify your previous salary?

Ask A Manager

A reader writes: How does a company go about verifying your self-reported salary history for a background check? I have a first round interview with a large, well-known firm, and they sent me forms to consent to their background check. On it, there is a large portion dedicated to salary history. On the form, where it asks for salary history, it also asks if they can contact the employer. references salary

Interviewers who tell you how well everyone there gets along. I’ve been in the following situation a few times and don’t really know what to make of it: Someone interviewing me will discuss how close their office/department/team is, or how well everyone gets along, or how much fun they have together, etc. Part of the interviewing process is the employer giving you information about their culture, so that you can see if it’s a culture you’d like or not.

Here we go… Verifying salary history. Have you ever heard of a company trying to confirm current salary after offering somebody a job? I applied for something online in an electronic application, did not have exact current salary info at the time (honestly don’t keep exact track after all these years, and always round up a little to keep from getting low-balled) so roundup from the ballpark where I knew I was. Salary verification during background checks. One thing struck me as really strange when I was interviewing. A hiring manager asked me for my salary history and said that in the past she was not able to hire candidates because they overstated their salary history. This was discovered by their company during the background check. I thought background checks meant checking on employers and references.

My communication MA and teaching background are gathering dust on the resume. My salary is public record. I have worked for the state for 8+ years so my salary history and everything associated with my rate of pay is public (including the date of my last promotion, my starting salary and how my salary compares with my coworkers). It seems I am immediately at a disadvantage when approaching a potential employer with salary-related issues.

Employer wants my salary history — but I’ve already accepted their job offer. After I accepted and signed the offer letter, they sent me a link to enter my information to complete the background check, but in the employment verification section, they asked for my salary at every job in the past 10 years … and it is a required field in the form! My peer did an exit interview with one of my employees behind my back.

I was promised time off for my wedding that’s now being revoked, salary requirements in a cover letter, and more

Ask A Manager

I interviewed for a position in October, and during the interview I told them that I was getting married in April, six months away. I applied for a job at the start of December, passed a recruitment test last week, and now have an interview for what I think is a full-time job. The interview is at the beginning of March. If I pass the interview in March, would it be OK to ask the employer if I could start in May and explain I’m a final-year college student?

I’ve turned in over 80 applications to businesses all over the city and have had maybe 6 interviews with no luck. For the most part the interviews go really well and some go so far as to say they will contact me in the following days for a second interview but never do.
