Negotiating pay if I fill in during my manager’s maternity leave. Recently, the manager I’m working with was told by her doc to go on early maternity leave, which leaves her post open for about 6 months. “I’m really excited about this role, but I’ve been advised not to give out out my Social Security number until we’re at a stage in the process where it’s necessary for a background check.”

To maximize your chances, be very specific about the type of work you want to do (don’t just say “a job”) and include information about your background. Be prepared for most responses to be focused on experience — you’re more likely to hear “we look for candidates with a background in X, Y, and Z” than to hear “we only hire people the CEO likes” or “we reject a lot of people for talking too much,” even if both are true.

The store had a black-out period where nobody could request time off for November and December of last year (for the busy holiday season), but on top of that, they have been told they cannot get time off from January-April because her manager will be on maternity leave. We keep things pretty professional, but friendly in the office, and usually only cross paths when we come in in the morning and leave at night. I would easily pass a background check and have strong professional referrals. I am returning to the same company but a new position after a one year maternity leave. I could work for three months and then give my notice as I don’t work for July and August anyway so I wouldn’t be leaving them in the lurch.
