Ask A Manager

January 6, 2011 A reader writes: How do I determine where the line is between enforcing policy and being a jerk? Example: my workplace (a restaurant) has no policy for smoke breaks. But it DOES have a policy where you get a 10 minute break for every 4 hours you work, and a half hour for every 6 hours you work (it amounts to a break every 2 hours, more or less). However, you also want to make sure that it makes sense to have that policy in the first place.

I am wondering about what level of detail on benefits/work conditions/perks is normal to put in an offer letter or contract. In my current job, the offer letter I signed says my salary, total amount of PTO, and that I get a professional development stipend. Different written policies govern how all those things actually work (for example, how much the PD stipend is, when people can request vacation, extra, non-pay, benefits for time based in our remote offices, etc.).

Ask A Manager

It was my first job out of college and I was feeling really tied down and restless and wanted to try a new environment, so I switched from a consulting firm to working in an internal corporate role. I’m basically miserable at my new job. I liked my old job better and feel like I had a little quarter-life crisis and case of the grass is greener. I left a temp job about 6 months ago. I recently applied for an admin job at a college.

This is fine in principle as our company has no policy on dating coworkers and they work in different departments. I gave close to four weeks notice at my nonprofit full-time job to coincide with the end of our fiscal year (also the date our employment contracts are up each year). I got chastised for taking initiative, coworker secretly plans to quit after maternity leave, and more

Ask a Manager

We have a temp coming in to transition her work during her leave from June to October. I think taking months of maternity leave pay and benefits, knowing you are going to quit shortly thereafter (within 2 months), is robbery and a truly bad thing to do. I know the temp coming in (former employee who saw grass isn’t always greener) and strongly assume that she will want the full-time gig if presented to her after the current employee’s departure.

Or anything that comes up in a google search under their name? While you can certainly find people who feel even a basic google search is an invasion of privacy, the internet is right at our fingertips and I don’t think it’s a massive overstep to do a quick search because you’re curious about someone’s professional background. If you’re searching for info on their personal life, that’s an overstep (and probably in no way relevant to your work with them).

Ask A Manager

The way you describe the conflict, it sounds two-sided — in which case it’s not unreasonable for your boss to tell you to find a way to get along if you want to stay in your job. But my gut is telling me, they’ll be like the people who’ve already turned their backs on me and brush me off as someone incapable of the job at hand. Should I not have disclosed in a temp work interview that I’ll be moving next year?

That’s because for most jobs, picking the best candidate is rarely solely about skills and experience. But in the real world, other factors matter too—people skills, intellect, communication abilities, enthusiasm for the job, and simply what kind of person you are. Work experience of any kind is good, sure, and I’m sure that just a job with the same sort of experiences as an intership will work just as well. Though its worth noting that most jobs through school will be work-study, and employers increasingly know this, and in my experience you don’t have to really do anything or have any qualifications to get a work-study. Still definitely better than nothing, but a job outside your school signals you had to compete to get it.
