short answer Saturday — 7 short answers to 7 short questions

Ask A Manager

My company is going through an organizational change which will result in the elimination of my job. The company has been very vocal about wanting to keep all employees, and has offered three alternatives: a promotion with enough positions for 10% of the people with my job title, a demotion with loss of some PTO benefits and salary, or a lateral transfer to an entirely different job type. Does that apply to jobs that are very specifically seasonal?

should I do mediation with my incompetent boss, recruiter said she felt used when I turned down an offer, and more

Ask a Manager

I think the answer is to simply look for another job, but my question is: Does mediation usually work in situations like this? I recently relocated (a temporary long relocation actually, but I’m open to staying here), and part of that was a job search because I didn’t think my company would let me transfer. I’ll need a recruiter to help then, but frankly she got me an offer that was serviceable but not in line with my long-term career goals.

yes, you really should write a better cover letter

Ask A Manager

That’s because for most jobs, picking the best candidate is rarely solely about skills and experience. But in the real world, other factors matter too—people skills, intellect, communication abilities, enthusiasm for the job, and simply what kind of person you are. So far my job search has been using generic resumes and generic cover letters with lack-luster results. When I was job hunting, I thought if I sent out 8 letters a day, I was doing well.

when's the right time to ask for a raise?

Ask A Manager

Reply Jamie April 4, 2011 at 1:28 pm This is great advice – and the point about having been there under a year is something to keep in mind when you’re negotiating your starting salary and the job is in the process of being defined. Some jobs are what they are, and if you’re taking on a position with clear duties a year is a good rule of thumb. And simply showing up at work to do the job you were hired to do isn’t a reason for an above-avergage raise.
