Why I started a company (and why more women should too)

Ms. Career Girl

It’s not just a matter of equity. When I was in college, I’d read about CEOs confidently stating that they didn’t hire for diversity because they hired for merit. She enjoys playing jazz piano, reading her Kindle, and chatting with family and friends. .

rejecting anyone who doesn’t send a thank-you note is terrible hiring

Ask a Manager

Moreover, rejecting anyone who doesn’t send a thank-you is going to keep you from hiring candidates who come from backgrounds where they didn’t learn that particular job search convention, which many, many people do not: like people from less advantaged backgrounds, or people from families where their parents weren’t office workers, or many immigrants (thank-you notes aren’t a thing in many other countries).

should I ask my employer to take down a Blue Lives Matter flag?

Ask a Manager

As a whole, our organization has a diversity problem. When I have brought up issues of diversity and inclusion in the past, I have been told that our clients are overwhelmingly white and conservative, and we need to make them comfortable (I don’t think that assessment is strictly true, for what it’s worth). I don’t want to offend people with family members who are on the police force or active military, of which there are a few in the office.

Frugality is a career tool | Penelope Trunk's Brazen Careerist

Penelope Trunk

This is dinner table conversation in my family.) I spend money on wood and stone and dirt and veggies and that is money well-invested, becuase it gives me hundreds of hours of enjoyment, by myself AND with my family, outside in the garden (not to mention all the food we grow ourselves). The most productive people in the world seem to be the most diverse and balanced. Flashing money is an absolute faux pas in our family. Is this your first time here?

How to put blog comments to good use | Penelope Trunk's Brazen.

Penelope Trunk

I read the comments from farm families and gave them extra weight. There were lots of people who told me that the family was insane and that the guy should always choose me before the farm but I decided that if you want to live on a farm, you have to live by those values, so I should go with what the farm family comments told me. I knew a family growing up who had a family farm. The farmer's family seemed to rise up as one to expel you from their midst.
