I have never been surrounded by happy people until I lived in Wisconsin. Wisconsin does quite well :) I am at a crossroads, maybe. If you ask a bunch of people in Wisconsin if they're happy, they'll just say yes. I suspect the real culprit is that they have an even more idealized vision of what "happiness" is, and so rate themselves below average, much like competent people tend to underrate their abilities more than incompetent people.

Although I was raised on the East Coast, my parents are midwestern, and I spent many summers in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and think the midwest is a great place to raise kids.
