Yesterday at the Annual SHRM Conference, I attended the session, “A Business Case for Hiring Veterans: Designing and Implementing a Veteran Hiring Strategy.” Look beyond job boards and find ways to engage them. Measure at periodic intervals like quarterly metrics. It’s easy to overmeasure and be focused on the metrics. You want to make sure that while you are aware of the metrics, it’s not your number 1 focus.

While at a conference a few years ago, several of us stood around, dark circles under our eyes, squinting to read the Twitter handles on name tags, grasping at topics not yet run dry. The dark circles were not brought on by conference parties, as many might suspect, but by late night blogging and creations of the next day’s social media strategies. Perhaps it’s in the subtle shift of job boards and HR technology to add social capabilities to their offerings.

The difference between qualifications and skills, in my mind, is that qualifications encompass workplace related attributes that are necessary to being a strong contributor to a specific organization within a specific role, while skills encompass specific knowledge and abilities that may or may not be related directly to the job description or employer- though I’m open to argument on this definition.

So, we are finding alternative metrics to track our progress. Disclosing a recent medical condition when job searching (#2 at the link). When I wrote to you, I actually was in the final stages of interviewing for a job, which I got! I ended up disclosing my health situation to my new manager during the phone call in which I accepted the job. It’s “where are you now?”
