employee clique is causing problems, employer will pay me more if I work as a contractor, and more

Ask a Manager

Employer will pay me more if I work as a contractor. I was recently extended a job offer at $58k. I asked him to expand upon this, and he said that if I wanted to waive all benefits, including leave, and become a 1099 contractor, they could meet $65k. He said if I only waived health insurance could he offer $60k. They can’t just decide to make you a 1099 contractor without restructuring the job; there are legal restrictions on how contractors must be treated.

It did hurt a lot, and while I’m not the kind of person to whine over every little scratch (hence why I just ignored it until our job was complete) an apology would have been nice. I am job searching. Many jobs ask me to apply with my “desired salary” (which at least is better than salary history). It’s five answers to five questions.

refusing a job duty on ethical grounds, company wants me to show them another employer’s offer letter, and more

Ask a Manager

Can I refuse a job duty that I ethically object to? You’re allowed to refuse, but they’re allowed to say it’s a requirement of your job and fire you for refusing. You could say something like this: “I understand that this is part of the job, but as a vegetarian, this isn’t something I feel I’m able to do. If it doesn’t, then at that point you’d need to decide if you still want the job under these conditions — but hopefully you won’t need to.
