how can you tell if an overqualified applicant is right for the job?

Ask a Manager

I manage our most entry-level position, a basic administrative position that has been categorized at times as both an administrative assistant or office manager. We knew Fergus was highly overqualified for the position, but he said that he was looking or a role with less responsibility due to family issues, so we hired him. Are there questions that we can ask to figure out if she’ll be able to successfully shift to this lower level position?

contacting people who had my job before me, am I overqualified, under-qualified, or just right, and more

Ask A Manager

Am I overqualified, under-qualified, or just right? I still feel like an entry level candidate, so I’ve been applying to entry level jobs–some that ask for the masters, most that just ask for a bachelor’s degree–and I don’t know if I’m under/overqualified. On the other hand, I have a masters degree and I worry employers won’t hire me for something entry level based on that.

Life After College: What It’s Really All About

Ms. Career Girl

It’s easy to assume that most graduates plunge into entry-level positions, careers, or casual tours of Southeast Asia. In the wake of my college graduation, I sent out a newly minted resume and several shy cover letters to any job that remotely resembled my major (English). One manager told me on the phone that he simply could not let me file legal documents in a dark, moldy basement because I was overqualified and his conscience would never forgive him.

This morning I woke up to an ideal-but-awkwardly-timed job posting for an entry-level position I’m eminently qualified for at a company I’d already mentally ear-marked as a good potential future employer. Still, I think if I put it in the cover letter, I may as well not apply at all for all the consideration they’re going to give me. Should you really avoid “I” statements in a cover letter? I have a clarifying question about advice I have heard that seems to go against the examples of good cover letters on your site.
