If there were a neurology lab in rural Wisconsin he’d probably send me there because he has told me numerous times, most recently right after he apologized for pushing me, again, that I am emotionally abusive to him. He tells me he researched women’s shelters in my area.

I didn’t know her very well — I had only visited her 4-5 times over the last five years because of distance, but found her a wonderful women who had led a full and complete life. All because my niece can come to Wisconsin from Texas and Kate and I could see her and her husband.

From December to April, Kate and I spent most of our non-working time figuring out how to get Mom, a “snow bird” who lives in Wisconsin in the summer and Arizona in the winter, into a facility that could provide her support while still not robbing her of independent living. And I’ve lived in Wisconsin, where, I’m not kidding about this, almost everyone will tell you they are happy. But you can trust me on this, Wisconsin does not offer a lot of choices and opportunities. Now I’m going to preemptively rip on everyone who thinks they are going to comment here about Wisconsin. Wisconsin does have things that are world-class: Football , beer , cheese , PETA-inflaming bioscience departments. People don’t live in Wisconsin because of that.

I mean, there’s the Wisconsin ID department, and the driver’s license department, and the car registration people, and you can even get a passport photo taken here. I feel an urgent need to separate a sane online conversation about women at work from an insane media that is doing exactly what destroys women at work: Making it extremely difficult for me to have a manageable schedule for parenting. Refreshingly open gobbed about what many other women are thinking but too frightened to say. Why should women have to hide this stuff in shame? I came home from this trip with Facebook connections in Canada, Mexico, North Carolina, Chicago, Connecticut, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and South Jersey (which I consider, an extension of Philadelphia).
