am I being inflexible for not doing non-work things during work hours?

Ask a Manager

He has a full-time job, but his job might be a little different than mine (he’s done non-work stuff during work hours often). In those jobs, you’re typically managing your own workload and it’s not a role where someone else needs to cover for you if you’re gone for a while.

my boss sits outside my house for hours, parking woes, and more

I’m grateful to have the type of job where this is possible, and I appreciate my boss’s flexibility. I have the type of job where occasionally — and on a fixed schedule — I have to look at physical paperwork that my boss reviews before I do.

can I ask my interviewer to get a Covid test, should my resume say I’ve been vaccinated, and more

Ask a Manager

I’m a 2020 grad in my first real office job after college, and I had a question about professional email etiquette. My job is fully remote and most one-on-one communication with coworkers is over email. I recently got the Covid vaccine due to my job working near first responders.

my boss is upset I won’t drive long distances, getting reimbursed for pole dancing classes, and more

My job involves some emergency response (not all the time). Some context: I am new to this job (less than one year) and have never been to this specific type of response. Mary moved all of her personal belongings to her new office… except the picture of her late niece.

update: can job-hopping BE my career somehow?

Ask a Manager

Remember the letter-writer who was wondering if job-hopping could be their career somehow ? I ended up quitting the office job I mentioned in my first letter and moving to a different state. I still believe that a less sedentary part-time job with a high enough wage that I could actually support myself is my best bet. The job I have now is a 30-min walk from where I live, and I work 20-22 hours per week. update: can job-hopping BE my career somehow?

should I disclose my depression to my boss?

Ask a Manager

I have not disclosed this to my employer and do not include that information when I apply for new jobs. You can read my answer to this letter at New York Magazine today. A reader writes: Does it ever make sense to let an employer know that you suffer from depression? I take an antidepressant daily. I’m not seeing a therapist. I would call it more of a functional depression, where I can live with it, but at times it can feel worse and I have to force. myself to work.

do I really need to set personal goals after a terrible year?

Ask a Manager

But I’ve become very unhappy in my job. I’m moving in January (across town, not far) and I know already that I’m going to need to change my job in 2021 (Working on my resume now, based on your advice). What I’m running into is — goals for 2021. But I just don’t have any energy to make goals for 2021. I don’t even WANT goals for 2021. I know that I’m moving, and I’m finding a new job.

I didn’t realize how strongly I felt about them until I accepted a new job offer, and practically floated out of the room when I realized I’d never have to interact with them again. I’ve been at my new job for a little under a year, and my inherited team of five at a place with good hiring and management practices and high expectations of staff has been an absolute joy to coach and manage. Is my first job supposed to be crappy? They offered me the job, and I took it. I didn’t want to get a job, I wanted to sleep for a year and I was hoping someone would give me an excuse to just walk away from a source of stress. But I took the job, and things worked out.

update: will it hurt my chances of getting hired if I can only do video interviews?

Ask a Manager

my job gave everyone a gift but me, pre-planned trips when interviewing, and more

I’ve been searching for a job since last October and got to several second-round interviews but was never selected… and then COVID hit and my large state university set a hiring freeze. It’s your Friday good news, with more accounts of success even in this weird time.

updates: the inappropriate boss, the small gifts, and more

Ask a Manager

My new boss asked everyone how many people they’ve slept with (#2 at the link). After watching this rodeo happen multiple times, I decided my energies would be best spent looking for a new job rather than trying to get a resolution from HR. can I talk about my boyfriend’s other girlfriend at work?

Ask a Manager

Moving in with them coincided with a new job, and I really don’t know how to talk about it at work, or if it’s even appropriate. I like my job but my company is postponing a promised promotion and cutting everyone’s pay. In addition to the salary cut, they’ve frozen all new hires and promotions for this year. All my friends and family say I should run, quit, and find a new job ASAP.

updates: the nail clipping, the uninvited cockroach, and more

Ask a Manager

I’m the person whose annoying coworker at my new job was totally overstepping, offering lots of unsolicited “help” and even whispering at me across the table at meetings. I think the other two teachers are just more easy-going, and one was brand-new and probably very grateful for her help. The reason for that is that I never really wanted that job in the first place. I also got engaged and started a dream job. It’s “where are you now?”

The minute theaters were recommended to close for Covid I pretty much knew I wouldn’t have a job to go back to when they opened again – and sure enough, I was furloughed at Easter and laid off in August. I decided to make a business out of my freelance work and quit my job.

it’s your Friday good news

Ask a Manager

Although I love my current job/supervisors/coworkers, I’ve hit the salary cap at my current organization. Despite my reservations about changing organizations during this pandemic, I applied for and got a new job! That 2 years would have been up at the beginning of 2021.

2020 33

it’s your Friday good news

Ask a Manager

I’ve been applying for jobs for over two years, trying to get out from under a micromanaging, hypercritical, fussbudget of a boss. But more importantly, there will be a chance that I can help improve the situation at the new organization in some ways that match my skills. I don’t have any job hunting hacks to offer others: I think it was just that something finally worked out after dozens of interviews. After 4 years at my job, I am resigning.

it’s your Friday good news

Ask a Manager

This was near the start of the pandemic, and while I considered myself fortunate to still be employed while so many were not, I found that the new company wasn’t a great fit due to the culture and an unexciting (to me) product, so I started looking around for other opportunities. The fact I was able to land a new job during a pandemic and negotiate a higher offer was great in itself, but here’s best part: I was pregnant throughout this.

Should college seniors go to grad school to avoid the bad job market? I’m sure you’ve received variants of this question already, but I am desperate for some advice on how to go about job searching in an economy that seems on the brink of collapse.
