my company just hired back the person I replaced, how to choose who to take to a conference, and more

Ask A Manager

Although my boss assured us this was not going to have any effect on our positions (they are giving her the promotion that she turned down last summer), I’m still nervous about how this is going to affect my job. My first instinct is to begin looking for another job, but I’ve only been here for five months and most of my previous professional experience has been temp work with gaps in my employment history. How to choose who to take to a conference.

How Long is a Technology Career?

Hiring Technical People

If you are an older job searcher, and you are looking for a job, one thing you might do is look for a technical job. That’s what I suggest in Manage Your Job Search. And a temp-to-perm situation is fine. If you’ve been employed for long enough, a temp situation is fine, too. It is your job to do career development, whether you are employed by someone else or not. Send yourself to a workshop or a conference.

we’re not allowed to exercise while staffing a conference, employer wants my high school diploma, and more

Ask A Manager

We’re not allowed to work out while staffing a conference. I’m not too busy to take on these tasks, and I feel each of these is clearly in my job description. Because of these decisions, I’m not getting near the experience I hoped my first job would give me. That’s my job!” Keep in mind, too, that since this is your first job, there are going to be things that make sense to assign to people more experienced.).

emailing my boyfriend’s interviewer, job searching when you share a name with a dominatrix who looks like you, and more

Ask A Manager

Should I email my boyfriend’s interviewer about how much he deserves the job? He moved states for me and I was wondering if it would be okay to email a possible employer about how much he deserves the job and tell them about how he moved for me and now I want to take a risk for him? His girlfriend’s belief that he “deserves” the job will have exactly zero weight with an employer. They want to hire the person who’s the best fit for the job.

my manager is trying to push me out of my job, sympathy interviews, and more

Ask A Manager

I think my manager is trying to push me out of my job. Your manager is saying pretty clearly to you that he doesn’t think you’re equipped to the job as it’s currently configured; saying that the job has outgrown you basically means “the role has evolved into something that you’re not the right person to handle.” Recently a job that I am very interested in opened up in our corporate office so I applied.

my new coworker is my childhood bully, getting people stop with replying-all, and more

Ask A Manager

I recently started a new job. I recently encountered this situation during a job search. This is a normal cost of doing business for them, and it’s not reasonable to ask you to pay for a plane ticket that was purchased for you solely for the purpose of attending a job interview. And sure, canceling with one-day’s notice isn’t ideal, but I can promise you that they’d rather have you do that than waste their time with an interview when you know you won’t take the job.

networking contacts keep sending me bad job leads, surgery right after starting a new job, and more

Ask A Manager

Networking contacts keep sending me job leads that are too senior for me. I’ve been looking for an intern / entry-level engineering position for a long time and I’ve spoken with a lot of people about my job search (former classmates, professional engineers, hiring managers, neighbors who work with engineers, etc.). Sometimes I get referrals to job openings or direct input to HR about certain positions. Surgery right after starting a new job.

I’ve become the office seamstress, is it OK to block someone from being hired, and more

Ask A Manager

I would be willing to find a new job if this were to happen. But is it the right thing to prevent someone from getting a job just because I might feel uncomfortable? If you just don’t like someone, then no, it would be unethical to keep them from getting a job just based on that.

Or anything that comes up in a google search under their name? While you can certainly find people who feel even a basic google search is an invasion of privacy, the internet is right at our fingertips and I don’t think it’s a massive overstep to do a quick search because you’re curious about someone’s professional background. If you’re searching for info on their personal life, that’s an overstep (and probably in no way relevant to your work with them).

Warning: Your Major is Not a Floatation Device

Ms. Career Girl

I brought my pretentious attitude with me to my first job in financial sales. After a while, you may start thinking you will never get a job unless you do something within your major. What role does your major play in your job search or current career? Great job as usual!

paying to find a job, ambiguous questions on job applications, and more

Ask A Manager

Can you ask HR to clarify an ambiguous question on a job application? I have a question about addressing ambiguous questions on job applications. I did this because the ad states that applicants should direct job-related questions to HR (and provided HR’s email address). It’s been a few days and they haven’t responded, and I’m worried that if I’m left to my own devices, I may fill out the job application incorrectly.

my boss was arrested, being offered a job as the second choice, and more

Ask A Manager

I recently resigned my position without another job lined up, because…wait for it…the majority owner of my company was arrested on a charge related to our business. I know you are not suppose to leave your job without another position lined up, but I was in management at the time this happened, and I just could not take the mildly threatening phone calls from customers, the constant employee questions, the government/criminal investigation, and stress any longer.

Ask A Manager

My reference applied for the job I wanted, after I told her about it. I have been using three references regularly for the past couple years in my job search. I worked with her for 6 years, then off and on again after the company (Company A) downsized me and she called on me for temp work.
