Sklover’s Thoughts for the Work Week

Sklover Working Wisdom

“Why not go out on a limb? Isn’t that where the fruit is?”. – Frank Scully. Could it be a coincidence that nature places its sweetest rewards just outside of easy reach, in this way daring us to engage in a moment of courage and faith?

Sheryl Sandberg and the Balancing Act of Personal Mission vs Company Mission.

HR Capitalist

Personal values in the business world are tricky. While we all have the code we live by, we also have to go out and make a living for ourselves and are families. Generally speaking, the average professional doesn't have huge conflicts between their personal code of ethics and who they work for.

The Importance of Cash Handling Experience

The Corporate Con/noisseur

While the majority of consumers are gravitating towards the use of credit and debit cards for their purchases, nearly 10% of Americans indicate that they continue to use cash. Cash will remain a main source of payment, especially in the food, construction, and retail sectors.

The Not So Ugly Sisters of Tech

The Undercover Recruiter

Whereas millennials are described as tech-savvy, Gen Z, those born between 1995-2010, are the first generation that are true digital natives. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that nowadays jobs in tech are all the rage.

What Sets You Apart from Other Candidates?

The Corporate Con/noisseur

Job interviews are a two-way street. They are meant to be a conversation between the interviewer and yourself and both parties are meant to ask questions to get a better sense of one-another. However, you likely won’t be the only candidate interviewing for the position.

interviewer wants to know my current salary (with an update already included!)

Ask A Manager

I sometimes answer letters privately that I don’t publish here (due to the volume of mail I receive), and I thought this exchange was worth sharing (with the writer’s permission). In September I received this letter: I’ve interviewed with a great company that I am very interested in. I’m close to getting an offer. At my first phone interview, they told me the salary range — about 30%-50% above what I’m paid now.

Listing Your GPA on LinkedIn

The Corporate Con/noisseur

LinkedIn is perhaps the single best social networking site for entry-level and career professionals alike. It allows you to connect with former and current colleagues, friends, and family and to maintain a “virtual resume”.

update: my boss is my new next-door neighbor

Ask A Manager

It’s “where are you now?” month at Ask a Manager, and all December I’m running updates from people who had their letters here answered in the past. Remember the letter-writer whose department head was moving in next door ? Here’s the update. My update is (thankfully!) pretty boring. My firm’s partner and I hardly interact outside of the office and have had very few issues. I consider myself a thoughtful neighbor, but have been especially vigilant living next to him.

coworker is wearing BDSM jewelry, employers wants to post photos of my kids, and more

Ask A Manager

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…. My coworker is wearing jewelry that signifies a dominant/submissive relationship. I recently realized that one of my coworkers wears D/s jewelry every day. Funny enough, I wouldn’t have recognized it had I not been a devout reader of your blog and read the letter from the person asking about wearing a collar to work !) Now that I’ve noticed the jewelry, I feel like I can’t un-notice it.

I’m frustrated that my company won’t hire my husband

Ask A Manager

A reader writes: My company encourages candidate referrals with hire-on bonuses. So far, I’ve referred three candidates to my job function, the most recent one being my husband. We are a huge, international company with a few other partner couples working here, so that’s not frowned upon. Also, we have several teams of people like me, so if he were hired on we would work on separate teams under different managers, on other sides of the floor.
