My coworker got upset that I revealed that we’re temps. I don’t have an issue with this, but accidentally offended my fellow temp today when the following happened: Someone not on our immediate team was curious about why we had each had a 4:30 p.m. finish this week, and I explained that we were temps so it was a different rule. Her desire to hide her temp status is not typical. My intern just got hired by the same team I’m interviewing with.

I keep getting rejected after phone interviews. I am noticing that many employers are contacting me for phone screens but not many interviews. It could be, but the fact that they’re contacting you for phone interviews says that it might be something else. If it’s the latter, normally they’d just explain it on the phone — but are you being clear in your application materials that you’re not available until then? It’s five answers to five questions.

Interviewing internally when I can’t put on more professional clothes. Today my supervisor approached me and told me that “Kathy” would like to meet with me on Monday for an interview in the middle of my shift. I would literally leave my work area and walk to a conference room for the interview. My current job is clean, so nice jeans and a nice shirt or sweater would be easy to wear, but I could by no means dress as I normally would for an interview.

My ex-husband with anger issues was just hired as a temp at my new job. Since then, I have been on unemployment and doing temp work at a local hospital, which is a very difficult place to be hired. Yesterday, my daughter told me her father, my ex-husband, who was just fired (again) from his job due to anger issues, was hired at the hospital as a temp worker. Am I right to be turned off by this volunteer interview experience? Initially the interview went well.

Of course, I didn’t plan the follow-up because the company’s already called me in for a phone interview and a series of in-person interviews with key players in the department. I’m a manager in charge of two permanent employees and three temps. Before I came to the agency, these temps were contracted employees and were encouraged to make the switch to a temp agency because there would be two positions opening and their contracts were ending.

The only phone number I have for them is giving me a busy signal. It was listed through a temp agency (unusual) and I tried to apply through their website, which was awful and tedious, asking ridiculous lower-than-entry-level temp agency type questions. Well, they might not be doing the hiring in-house and might simply forward your materials to the temp agency, but there’s no real harm in trying. I was hired on as a temp 6 months ago with about 30 other people.

I did a phone interview and he was great. We talked about his current job and whatnot, and I set up an in person interview for the next week with my boss. While he was in the interview with my boss, I had a coworker call the organization and ask for this person. Company is letting me choose whether to interview by phone or in person. I had a phone message and email from an HR person about a position I applied for. Both mentioned wanting to schedule an interview. After the date and time were set, she asked me if this would be on the phone or in-person. I was taken aback, because I assumed it would be on the phone. Do you think it’s OK to do a phone interview at this time?

Did I wrap up this phone interview rudely? I had a phone interview recently, and I thought it went great except for the end. The interview was scheduled for 30 minutes, but after both she and I had exchanged questions and answers, I had noticed that we had gone about 10 minutes over. In an effort to be conscientious of the interviewer’s time, I mentioned that I had enjoyed speaking with her, that I wanted to respect her time and that we had gone over.
